Sri Lankan Children in Crisis
Parents all over Sri Lanka are being forced to pick which child they can afford to send to school - if any. 2 in 5 Sri Lankan households spend 75% of their income on food, so sacrifices have to be made - school being one of them. It costs roughly 1 AUD a day to send a child to school, but in the current economic crisis, many can’t afford to send even one child.
Although education in Sri Lanka is free, no meals are provided. It has been reported by teachers that their students are fainting during school because they are not getting enough food. Students are able to continue to go to school when aid agencies have provided meals for the schools to supply their students with, attendance being maintained.

We have heard from our local partners in Sri Lanka that children are in need of school supplies. It would cost roughly $15 AUD for a school pack, full of stationary. We have also heard many children are in need of shoes, as they are walking long distances to get to school and can’t afford public transport (an additional $15 AUD).
